Back to the 50's

It was a dark and stormy night. Four young dames and an older fatherly-like gent gathered at the local Lake Effect Diner to enjoy some delicious food. While the parking lot next to the diner was packed full of cars, the diner itself was suspiciously empty. The air smelt of sweat and potatoes (which will be explained later) but that did not stop the fearless gang from entering said diner.

They strategically placed themselves in a corner booth so as to always keep an eye out for their arch nemesis Jim Rat, (who was always giving them the evil eye for not going to the gym and eating too many deserts). The wall of mirrors allowed them to keep a watchful eye on the whole place and to periodically check their hair and makeup. The handsome gent inconspicuously turned around whilst putting on his spectacles to discern the identities of a group of nurses he thought he recognized.

Sighing at the menu, not able to decide what they wanted, they started out with a healthy appetizer of chili cheese fries, which most enjoyed, barring Aimee who said: “Gross! I expected the cheese to be gooey and it’s just sprinkled on top. So disappointing.” Having whet their appetites, they were finally able to decide on their main meals for the night.

Having not taken part of the chili cheese fries, Aimee was by far, the hungriest and so, proceeded to order a milkshake, a pulled pork sandwich with griddled mac n’ cheese and finished off with a strawberry shortcake desert (which was too delicious to pause and take a picture of). “It was good but I wasn’t blown away and I enjoyed the ambiance more than the meal itself”, she admitted.

Katie ordered potato pancakes (which are two hashbrowns, basically, filled with mashed potatoes, turkey and cheese, and topped with gravy). “Yum! But I don’t think there are enough potatoes in these potato pancakes ( ;) )Oh po-tay-to po-tah-to,” she sighed.

More potatoes were added to the table with Liz’s order of breakfast potato pancakes, stuffed with eggs and ham and cheese. “I donno, y’all, it tasted like a breakfast sandwich….it was pretty good,” Liz drawled in her thick Georgia accent.

Continuing with the breakfast theme, Courtney ordered blueberry pancakes, “the regular kind,” she specified, as she ordered. She was happy that “the blueberries were real and not the artificial ones that come in some of those muffins that you buy in a bag from superstores.” They were perfectly fluffy and were served with maple syrup butter and some whipped cream.

Mr. Sholler ordered the beer-battered fried haddock, even though he usually only orders fish when he knows that it comes fresh straight out of the water. He thought it was pretty tasty, though, but not as good as the fish he’s had in Maine. Happy to be the ladies’ guest he claimed “a good time was had by all. It’s not always about the food, it’s also about the company you keep.” He kindly paid for everyone’s meal, so naturally the ladies asked if he could join them for every meal.

Leaving the diner, later that evening, the group conceded, “the food is ok, but the ambiance takes the cake.”
